Wine-based cocktails can be a great alternative to traditional mixed drinks as they are low in alcohol, lighter and more approachable. The versatility of wine cocktails ranges from bubbly and fruity to herbaceous and complex, and appeals to a wide range of palates.
What’s more, fresh ingredients and unique flavor combinations all help position wine cocktails as a trendy and fun choice for social gatherings and special occasions.
Sonoma, CA-based winery Rodney Strong Vineyards has put together some tips for creating wine cocktails. They’ve also shared a recipe for the sauvignon blanc-based Ginger Blossom Fizz.
Start with quality wine
Just like cooking, the better the ingredients, the better the final product. Choose a wine or variety you enjoy drinking on its own, as its flavors will shine through in the cocktail.
Balance is key
Aim for a balance of sweet, sour, and bitter elements. You can achieve this by using fresh juices, herbs, liqueurs and bitters.
Chill out
Serving your wine cocktails chilled enhances their refreshing qualities. Use plenty of ice and festive chilled glasses.
Get creative with garnishes
Fresh herbs, fruit slices, or edible flowers can add visual appeal and complement the flavors of your cocktail.
Experiment and have fun
Don’t be afraid to try new combinations and adjust recipes to your liking. Remember, the best wine cocktails are the ones you enjoy the most!
